Precision medicine: Leading medical research to change life results

It can not be prevented that we are now somewhere in the starting era of Precision Medicine. We are still adapting and trying to apply for precision medicine in every aspect of human health in our country, Indonesia. Thus, “Precision Medicine: Leading Medical Research to Change Life Results” was chosen as the theme of the 3rd International Conference and Exhibition on Indonesian Medical Education and Research Institute (3rd ICE on IMERI). The conference was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 4th to 6th November 2018. Numerous topics of the 3rd ICE on IMERI, covering (1) Drug Development, (2) Sport and Exercise Studies, (3) Metabolic, cardiovascular and aging, (4) Human Nutrition, (5) Human Reproductive, fertility and family planning, (6) Human Genetic, (7) Cancer, (8) Infectious Disease and Immunology, (9) Neuroscience and Brain Development, (10) Occupational and Environment Health, (11) Stem cell, (12) Medical Technology, (13) Hypoxia and Oxidative Stress Study, (14) Hydration, (15) Clinical Research, (16) Molecular Biology, (17) Animal Research, (18) Bioinformatics, and (19) Medical Education.

All health-related studies are aimed to improve human quality of life. Studying human with its complexed multidiscipline of health systems, and capturing all the diverse aspects and health science branches was indeed challenging. From the psychological aspect, it was found that elderlies tend to have better psychological well-being if they live with their grandchildren compared to their children alone. From the elderlies' caregiver aspect, it was found that prolonged exposure to their caregiving can aggravate anxiety and depression to them. Functional status decline, polypharmacy, and delirium were found to be correlated with 3-month mortality among the elderly. Calf circumference also can be a predictor of sarcopenia among the elderly population.

The occupational health problem has been increasing lately. Sedentary habit, which is profound in drivers, was found to have higher blood glucose. This can lead to adverse effects in the future. Future studies should be done to other occupations. Nitrox II also exhibits a better outcome compared to normal compressed air groups in divers up to 28 meters of seawater (Hati, 2018). Another study conducted by Ali also showed that being an air-traffic controller in airport tend to have a higher tendency of having dry eye syndrome, especially in the population whose work is more than ten years and over 30-year age.

One of the most challenging and rapidly developing subjects is oncology. A new risk factor for cancer was studied, such as alcohol can lead to laryngopharyngeal reflux and, therefore, cancer. Sanger sequencing method for detecting ESR1 mutation was failed to detect primary breast tumors. The new classification for cervical cancer, IIIB-plus, is recommended to accommodate a patient who has renal impairment due to their special needs and treatments. On the molecular level, Manganese Superoxide Dismutase suppression can reduce stemness and tumorigenicity of breast cancer.

Genomic studies also play an important role in identifying rare diseases. These studies are aimed to screen for rare diseases and adding database on a national level. These were done to detect Gaucher Disease and Type II Mucopolysaccharidosis.

As with the previous conferences, we focused on making our studies applicable to our daily life and on helping advance the scientific information disseminated. We are proudly honored to have multidisciplinary audiences up to 269 articles. On behalf of 3rd ICE on IMERI, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has shown immense interest and passion for submitting such a variety of abstracts, sharing their presentations, and some fulfilled articles for publication.
